John Singleton-Abduction - En La Escena

John Singleton Blog about ABDUCTION

I was super excited to sit down and talk with John Singleton about his new film ABDUCTION. A thriller centered on a young man, Taylor Launter who sets out to uncover the truth about his life after finding his baby photo on a missing persons website.  It had been six years since his last film and WOW what a great way to come back! It's fun and exciting and he worked with A-List actors.  Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello and Alfred Molina, impressive!

In this segment we discuss, how some of the action sequences were set up but, what we didn't discuss in the clip is that, I got my first speaking part in his film Baby Boy. I was the glamed up Latina taking Tyrese's taco order at the Lucy's Drive Thru : ) I had always dreamed of being an actress but once I got on the set I knew there was so much more I wanted to learn. I loved the cameras, the production crew, the excitement of setting up a scene and that feeling my heart will pound out of my chest when John yelled "ACTION!"  Loved it! You know when it's right when how you think and feel transpires in your reality. Thank you John!!!

John Singleton has recently celebrated 20 years since being the youngest individual and first African American ever to be nominated for Best Director/Writer Academy Award.  Making movie history with his directorial debut Boyz 'N the Hood. I admire John not only for his work as a writer, producer and director but mostly for his biggest starring role and that is being a single parent of his 5 children.   Congratulations on being a wonderful Father too and continued success!

Last thought, my new favorite line in a film is... "I'll kill you and all of your FACEBOOK friends!!"  When you see the film, you'll know what I mean! Hysterical!

You are now officially En La Escena! : )

Pam-pana-ni-na-na…. The chorus to Mark Anthony’s “ Contra la Corriente”... En La Escena

Pam-pana-ni-na-na…. The chorus to Mark Anthony’s “ Contra la Corriente”...who can stop singing it after his concert tonight at the IZOD theatre? The night was electric, magical, some would say…spiritual as one concert-goer noted after Mark’s rendition of “Aguanile.”  “I saw the spirits through him” is this concert-goers commentary on the palpable energy Mark emitted through this spiritual chant but that wouldn’t be the only soul capturing moment of the night.  Mark delights us with his glide across the stage as we sing along to some of a long list of his greatest hits.  No Nadie Como Ella”, and the audience rises,”Ahora Quien”, and we can’t help but dance.  Mark then slows it down to a ballad and he closes his eyes and we watch. We watch as if under a spell of his leading as is the type of experience that happens at a Mark Anthony concert and then he asks, do you want to dance? And we do. “I need to know.” As he leads us with his melodic throaty voice it occurs to me that we’re at party, a celebration really and that’s just how it feels.  Entertaining, to say the least, and easy to see why he packs houses again and again.  Mark is like the relative who invites you in, offers you a drink, and pulls you out to dance.  The life of the party who plays the timbales and calls out your song and you answer.  Except this time it was thousands of people who, to Mark’s “Ayee”, we answered, Que can-tan mi gente! And what of his mood you ask? Did his famous breakup set a tone for the evening? Well you wouldn’t tell from his energy but at one point when he closes his eyes and re-opens them and offers us the intense look that Mark gives so well as he belts out a ballad, one can only wonder if it was personally inspired.  Mark not only captures the audience, he takes us with him on his journey, as we sing along with him, he stops, looks out into the crowd and gestures to his band to quiet the music.  He holds the microphone towards us and as we sing, he closes his eyes, raises his arms, and dances.  Mark invigorates, delights, and even plays with us as he thanks us for the night and walks off stage while we wait expectantly for just one more appearance.  And then he appears again as the audience goes wild.  He finishes with a song and enraptures us as he holds a note for what seems like days and I realize, if you weren’t a Mark Anthony believer before, you will be now.

GOYA FOODS CELEBRATED 75th ANNIVERSARY WITH MARC ANTHONY

Goya donates 75,000 pounds of food to local charities throughout concert series
Secaucus, NJ (September 12, 2011) - Goya Foods, Inc., the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the United States, celebrated their 75th anniversary at a concert with Marc Anthony at the IZOD Center in Rutherford, New Jersey on Friday, September 9,2011, one of nine concerts throughout six major cities including Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Orlando, and New Jersey. As part of the Goya Gives campaign, a series of initiatives the company has developed in partnership with United Way, Goya donated 75,000 pounds of food to local charities throughout the country.
“Giving has always been an integral part of our culture, so as we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we wanted to give back to the communities that have always supported us since 1936,” said Robert Unanue, president of Goya Foods.

Backstage at the New Jersey concert, Goya, on behalf of Marc Anthony donated 10,000 pounds of food products to The Puerto Rican Family Institute, a nonprofit, multi-program family oriented health and human service agency whose primary mission is to prevent family disintegration and enhance the self-sufficiency of the Latino community.
“I am honored and humbled to play a part in Goya’s 75th anniversary celebrations and to be able to give back together to these communities who have supported us for so long,” said Marc Anthony, who presented Goya with three autographed guitars in honor of their 75th and their commitment to helping those in need. In March of 2011, Goya donated one million pounds across multiple markets, the largest ever single-day food donation by a food company. NYIFF Interviewed by Lily Agosto for En La Escena

I had the awesome opportunity to meet and get inside of the minds of some very talented and creative directors, writers, producers and actors.

Starting with documentary film maker Director Koen Suidgeest of KARLA'S ARRIVAL. He must of had a tremendous amount of courage and strength to make this film that follows a 19 years old mother, Suleylin Aguilar and baby Karla. Who live as a part of a group of kids in a small park in Manague, Nicaragua as they struggle through the first year of the child's life. It killed me to watch mother, Suleylin putting her new born baby Karla to sleep in a card board box! I would have never been able to work on this project without wanting to save every child in that park. Director Koen shares with us his experience and how Suleylin is living now.

Alice Gomes director, writer producer of her short film LAPIS DE COR created a very visual cinematic progression of this very touching story of Claudio, a poor 9 years old boy who lives alone with his mother, loves to draw. His father left years ago and Claudio nurtures the idea that drawing a colored portrait of his father will make him come home only to find he doesn't have any colored pencils...until he obtains 3 magical pencils. The story is actually brilliant and I look forward to seeing more of Ms. Gomes work.

The documentary PRECIOUS KNOWLEDGE Film maker Ari Palos tells us an inspiring story and shows that if we care enough about the future and eduction of our children this nation can be more powerful than we can imagine. Fewer than six in ten Latino adults in the United States have a high school diploma. Precious Knowledge is the unbelievable and inspiring story of high school seniors in the Mexican American Studies Program at Tucson High School. 82% of the students in the program will graduate and go on to college. Their journey will astound you. In our interview Precilla Rodriquez shares with us her experience of being in the film and traveling to New York for the first time.

We also caught up with Director Evan Buxbaum of his Short Film LA LINEA a dark comedy that takes place in the trunk of a car, lead actor Alejandro discovers he's not the only one crossing the boarder to the US and is forced to come face to face with what he hoped to leave behind in mexico. Evan shares his great experience making this hysterical short film and what to look forward to next. I want the FEATURE! what a tease!!!

Director Adam Schlachter shows in his documentary HOLLYWOOD WHORES, the raw honest truth about the trials and tribulation of being an aspiring actor. Anyone who is in the performing arts world can relate to this documentary making all artist ask themselves...how much are YOU willing to compromise for stardom???? These guys were great to talk to. Actor, Anup's gives advice to all inspiring actors. "Let go of the Diva attitude"!!! I personally know aspiring actors who won't take certain jobs because it's not the ideal role they dreams of, but as an artist you gotta stay open cause you never know where life will take you!

Director/Writer Matt Dunnerstick's world premiere of film THE CUSTOM MARY touches upon all relevant topics in today's world, with surprise twist in the story I did not expect. A spec of Christ's blood falls into the hands of a pair of preachers, they hatch a scheme to clone Jesus. All they need is a willing host. Alicia Sixtos plays Mary a modest young Latina churchgoer. It doesn't take much convincing for her to carry the Lord's child. As the pregnancy progresses, she finds comfort and support in Joe ( James Jolly) , an African American Low-Rider mechanic and aficionado. 9 months later, the outcome is not quite as expected and the Mary finds herself desperate and scared. GOD reveals Himself unexplored places, But there's mistaking justice when it's low-rider style.

G.W.B.
Director/Writer - Jonathan Ullman uses a touch of his own personal experience and a whole lot of intense imagination! This film takes place in the George Washington Bridge area and within the course of a day two dominican brother Javy and Diego fight to survival a ruthless drug kingpin. Go on the ride on the streets of Washington Heights with danger and what might be the very last day of their lives! Thrilling!

Postales Colombianas
Director - Ricardo Coral is getting some controversial response from this film, which means to me... "it's good" if you can walk away from watching a movie that makes you think and feel a certain way then the director has done he's job! In this film Piedad, Caridad and Fanny are intellectual feminists, independent and well-heeled. One night they meet up to bond over their shared experiences, memories and points of view. When they find themselves approached by a trio of seemingly normal-looking gentleman, little do they know that these men will end up being their executioners.

I hope you enjoyed our interviews and learned a little something about making your own dreams come true. Go and support these great films and stay plugged in because I'm getting all the answers you want to know!

27th anniversary, of Brazil's Independence Day - En La Escena

En La Escena celebrated the 27th anniversary, of Brazil's Independence Day. Last Sunday, September 4, at 46th Street, also known as Little Brazil, and 6th Avenue near Times Square in New York.

The festival began to celebrate Brazil's Independence Day. Since 1984, that small celebration has only grown, up to the point of attracting over1.5 million people in 2010, according to official information from NYPD and this year was the same.

This year people come from as close as Connecticut and as far as California. Perfectly bonding with the diverse population of New York City, people also come from Europe, Asia and Africa, to join in the festivities. Some travel in groups, they commute by bus, some fly in, and others simply drive hundreds of miles. No one wants to be left out of this party, which is now considered the world's biggest Brazilian event outside Brazil and one of the greatest ethnic events in the Big Apple.
This year organizers of Brazilian Day, The Brasilians Newspaper, The Brazilian-American Cultural Center (BACC) and TV Globo Internacional, are expecting a record number of participants for the 27th celebration.

There are no precise estimates of how many Brazilians live nowadays in the United States. However, the Brazil Information Center (BIC), a non-profit poll organization based out of Washington, D.C., estimates that there are over a million Brazilians throughout the entire country. Of those, 300 thousand live in the three-state area of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. The NGO also estimates that 100 thousand alone live in the Borough of Queens, New York.

The Brazilian Day festival is not simply a party celebration; it has become an opportunity to reach out to the Brazilian community in the United States. On that day, Brazilians join each other from different parts of the world, many coming from Brazil just to attend the festival, show their pride, advertise their culture and live their nostalgic and anonymous feeling of being an immigrant away from home. Christie Brinkley's Cause Celeb

Whenever I think of the Hampton's and glamour I think of my girlfriend Christie Brinkley. She is one of the most passionate people I know, especially when it comes to charities. Her devotion and widespread enthusiasm knows no bounds. From fighting for nuclear nonproliferation to a variety of other environmental issues, Christie is someone who doesn't just talk the talk but walks the walk (and what a joy it is to watch her walk that walk, lol)! My newest segment of Cause Celeb with Phillip Bloch on ABC World News Now features Christie Brinkley and one of her many causes, The Ellen Hermanson Foundation, which provides support and outreach to breast cancer patients in Southampton, NY. This cause is very close to my heart as I lost my mother to breast cancer in 1995. I only wish that an organization such as The Ellen Hermanson Foundation had been around during her battle with breast cancer as her body betrayed her. She never lost her spirit to fight, and neither did Ellen Hermanson, whose legacy lives on to provide much needed comfort and care to women and men who suffer from breast cancer. I applaud Christie's choice of Ellen's Run (the fundraising vehicle for the foundation) for a national campaign with Danskin. Yet another example of the good taste, kind heart, and sincere compassion from my beautiful friend!
Please check out the link below and tweet, post and spread the word to your entire cybernetwork. Wishing you all a great holiday weekend!

All my best,

Phillip
