JIGGA MAN’S HISTORIC EVENT!
Shawn “Jay Z” Carter sets the stage for HISTORIC evenings at the legendary CARNEGIE HALL. He will headline the first ever hip-hop focused series at Carnegie Hall, in the Stern Auditorium, raising millions for United Way of New York City and the Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation. Performances will be on:
February 6, 2012 at 8pm and
February 7, 2012 at 9:30 pm.
“It’s every artist’s dream to play a venue as legendary as Carnegie Hall”, commented Jay Z. “The fact that I can use the arts and my talent to benefit the education of the next generation of artist, entrepreneurs’, and great thinkers makes for a legendary night. I’m proud to be a part of the continuing work of United Way of New York City and the expanding Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation”.
The mission that night is most important. Poverty has the strongest correlation to dropout rates. New York City has the largest income gap in the U.S., and 30% of children in New York City live in poverty. Along with the statistics that show 39% of our New York City students who enter High School will not graduate on time.
The Shawn Carter Scholarship Foundation (SCSF) was conceived with his Mother Gloria Carter in 2002 and established as a public charity in 2003. The vision and mission is to help individuals facing social-economic hardships further his or her education at institutions of learning. Shawn and his mother kicked off the Foundations efforts by awarding one student with full college tuition in 2003. To date, the foundation provides up to 120 scholarships to students in 50 different states. Since the SCSF inception, over 750 students have received awards totaling over $1.3 million dollars.
Executive Director, Dania Diaz of the SCSF, states “this a very simple mission. Lets give young people who are really struggling in opportunities to live their dreams, go to college and pursue higher education.” “We are delighted to begin what I believe could be a great partnership with United Way and really expand the educational opportunities for many students along the educational pipeline. We are focused on increasing college access; we are focused on increasing opportunities’ for higher education, whether that’s vocational education, at a trade school, at a community college level or a 4-year college. We are looking at all avenues for success and we have been doing that for some time because we know that one third of the low income population will enter college and about one seventh will actually graduate from college. So we’re really looking at support systems throughout the pipelines to make it easier for young people to succeed and to really supports the President’s national call to “to get that lead back.”
United Way New York City is a wonderful organization that has dedicated more than 20 years of hard passionate work. Working with early childhood centers, public schools, families, students and educators to address barriers to success inside and outside of the classroom. Fighting poverty across five boroughs, they have designed and invested in evidence-based programs that help low-income New Yorkers achieve educational success, income stability and good health.
I can’t think of a better way to support our future. Education is the key to success. Whether you can attend this historic event or not look up these Foundations and make a donation, volunteer at your local public school. Encourage your children to study. Our children’s education is so important to our country’s future. Make a difference starting today!

Blog of the Virgin Island Fashion Week by Leticia Reyes
Virgin Island Fashion Week Blog
by Leticia Reyes
“Welcome, Virgin Islands Fashion Week Media!!”, read the sign held by Campbell Rey as I excitedly stepped off the plane into the airport resonating with tropical music. Campbell was our personal escort throughout our stay in sunny St. Thomas the week of October 5th to the 10th. His beaming smile and warm disposition was every indication of the great time that lay ahead!
The beauty of St. Thomas is immediately obvious as we make our way up the winding roads along the many mountains adorning the island. Spectacular views of pristine aqua blue water and lush greenery take our breath away as we point our fingers to the sights, in awe of the island’s magnificence. Living the constant hustle and bustle of New York City, the clean ocean air invigorated my senses and shot those feel good endorphins throughout my being. As we continued our ride towards the hotel, we searched for what was familiar. Although part of the US, St. Thomas’s infrastructure and general appearance is starkly different from any other US city I’ve visited. What did ring familiar was the presence of certain stores and fast food chains as well as the whopping prices of gas at over $4.50 a gallon. Before long, we left the downtown area and trekked across the country side of the 36 square mile island to Sugar Bay Resort.
Sugar Bay Resort boasts a 3 ½ star rating and is one of the top places to lodge. Keryn and Jude provided us with great hospitality and checked us into our room located on the top, or seventh, floor with a stunning balcony view of the ocean and the neighboring island of St. John, which is only a 10 minute ferry ride away. The grounds are kept clean and manicured and there are many activities planned throughout the day to keep things interesting. Perhaps most unique to the hotel are the presence of iguanas meandering the wet areas. As they stroll around the pool occasionally stopping to munch on some leaves, they blend into the scenery and spend their time as we do, basking in the hot sun. You can find your fair share of animals, not only on the grounds of Sugar Bay Resort, but additionally within its clear, blue beach water. The resort lends you free snorkel equipment for your underwater viewing pleasure. I spent many a late afternoon swimming through reef after reef spotting some of the most unique and colorful fish I’ve seen in quite some time. There's something very soothing about under water voyeurism and I was particularly happy with this hotel amenity. The temperature remained steady in the high 80’s to low 90’s with little to no trade winds making a trip to the pool’s waterfalls, and swim up bar, mandatory. With everything the resort had to offer, it was easy to work up a fierce appetite.
Dining options in St. Thomas are plentiful and delightful! Most notable among them were two restaurants with amazing sunset views. Banana Tree Grille is located on the grounds of the historic Bluebeard Castle which sits up on a mountainside as you overlook the Charlotte Amalie Harbor from your candlelit table. On par with the view, the pasta is handmade and delicious and the gorgonzola loaf is to die for! Grande Cru is another upscale restaurant that sits alongside the water of Charlotte Amalie Harbor, located in the charming Yacht Haven Grande area in downtown St. Thomas. Its evident Executive Chef, Patricia LaCorte, takes great pride in her culinary creations and the service is top notch. Adding to the experience is their award winning list of cocktails and uniquely crafted martinis. For a more casual experience, venture to the main town and take a break from the many duty free jewelry shops by lunching at Gladys’ Café. Gladys will be there tending bar while you are served fresh food native to the island. If its drinks you are into, you must stop by local tourist spot, Mountain Top at the Highline, to sip on their fresh and best banana daiquiris while overlooking a most precious view of the islands and sea.
After taking in the many sights and delights of the island, it became very clear that it was the perfect location for a week of beauty and high end fashion! As for the main event, Virgin Islands Fashion Week, or VIFW, kicked off at the newly renovated Marriott Frenchman resort with a fashion showcase honoring the who’s who of the Caribbean fashion scene. Designers and fashionistas alike travelled from all over the world to get a fresh feel of Caribbean style and flair. VIFW Coordinator, Henry Marsham, made sure to represent a wide array of designers hailing from different tropical locales as well as bringing in the not so subtle influence of Africa. The event was abuzz with excitement and anticipation of the fashion shows and the models who would grace the runway. Mr. Marsham also took the time to announce a special Eco-challenge to the designers, in which they compete to see who could come up with the most eco-friendly, fashion forward design. Environmental consciousness, as well as body consciousness, seemed to be high on the list of priority for many in attendance and certainly for those responsible for and participating in the event.
Various media, fashion lovers and powerful politicians were just a few spotted in the audience when it was time for lights, camera and action! White, flowing long curtains adorned the runway's backdrop as loud, colorful beats pulsated in the space. It was perfect for the likes of stand out 11 year old super model, Diva Divana to grace the cat walk. Having been trained by Miss Jay of Tyra Banks', America's Next Top Model, the young protégé added an element of elegance and grace. Another stand out to walk the runway was model search winner, Yulanda Gentle, who rocked every outfit with fierce attitude and incredible poise. The show was complete in its representation and celebration of the female form, as models of all shapes and body sizes took to the catwalk. Two noteworthy designers were Marcy De Santos, hailing from Guyana and Edna, a designer from Africa. Both designers delivered strongly in concept, but each added a little something to set them apart from the rest. Marcy's designs used materials that were all hand painted and boasted a beautiful earthy color palette. Her designs were not only well constructed but also extremely figure conscious. Edna showed incredible creativity in her safari inspired line and was most closely associated with couture wear. Her lavish creativity also awarded her first place in the eco-challenge. VIFW displayed the hottest in everything from bathing suits to casual beach wear to beautiful dresses and accessories to match. Vocalist Yewande provided the entertainment for the event as she sang in conjunction with some of the designers’ shows.
In conclusion, VIFW did not disappoint! The energy in the air, after the event, remained high as politicians and decision makers discussed ideas on how to make next year's event bigger and better than the last! I certainly enjoyed my time and look forward to watching its progress. A special thank you goes out to Henry Marsham and the Virgin Island Department of Tourism for inviting En La Escena to the show while showing us what a spectacular time could be had in gorgeous St. Thomas - a small island that left this reporter with a BIG impression! :o)

John Singleton Blog about ABDUCTION
I was super excited to sit down and talk with John Singleton about his new film ABDUCTION. A thriller centered on a young man, Taylor Launter who sets out to uncover the truth about his life after finding his baby photo on a missing persons website. It had been six years since his last film and WOW what a great way to come back! It's fun and exciting and he worked with A-List actors. Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello and Alfred Molina, impressive!
In this segment we discuss, how some of the action sequences were set up but, what we didn't discuss in the clip is that, I got my first speaking part in his film Baby Boy. I was the glamed up Latina taking Tyrese's taco order at the Lucy's Drive Thru : ) I had always dreamed of being an actress but once I got on the set I knew there was so much more I wanted to learn. I loved the cameras, the production crew, the excitement of setting up a scene and that feeling my heart will pound out of my chest when John yelled "ACTION!" Loved it! You know when it's right when how you think and feel transpires in your reality. Thank you John!!!
John Singleton has recently celebrated 20 years since being the youngest individual and first African American ever to be nominated for Best Director/Writer Academy Award. Making movie history with his directorial debut Boyz 'N the Hood. I admire John not only for his work as a writer, producer and director but mostly for his biggest starring role and that is being a single parent of his 5 children. Congratulations on being a wonderful Father too and continued success!
Last thought, my new favorite line in a film is... "I'll kill you and all of your FACEBOOK friends!!" When you see the film, you'll know what I mean! Hysterical!
You are now officially En La Escena! : )

Pam-pana-ni-na-na…. The chorus to Mark Anthony’s “ Contra la Corriente”... En La Escena
Pam-pana-ni-na-na…. The chorus to Mark Anthony’s “ Contra la Corriente”...who can stop singing it after his concert tonight at the IZOD theatre? The night was electric, magical, some would say…spiritual as one concert-goer noted after Mark’s rendition of “Aguanile.” “I saw the spirits through him” is this concert-goers commentary on the palpable energy Mark emitted through this spiritual chant but that wouldn’t be the only soul capturing moment of the night. Mark delights us with his glide across the stage as we sing along to some of a long list of his greatest hits. “No Nadie Como Ella”, and the audience rises,”Ahora Quien”, and we can’t help but dance. Mark then slows it down to a ballad and he closes his eyes and we watch. We watch as if under a spell of his leading as is the type of experience that happens at a Mark Anthony concert and then he asks, do you want to dance? And we do. “I need to know.” As he leads us with his melodic throaty voice it occurs to me that we’re at party, a celebration really and that’s just how it feels. Entertaining, to say the least, and easy to see why he packs houses again and again. Mark is like the relative who invites you in, offers you a drink, and pulls you out to dance. The life of the party who plays the timbales and calls out your song and you answer. Except this time it was thousands of people who, to Mark’s “Ayee”, we answered, Que can-tan mi gente! And what of his mood you ask? Did his famous breakup set a tone for the evening? Well you wouldn’t tell from his energy but at one point when he closes his eyes and re-opens them and offers us the intense look that Mark gives so well as he belts out a ballad, one can only wonder if it was personally inspired. Mark not only captures the audience, he takes us with him on his journey, as we sing along with him, he stops, looks out into the crowd and gestures to his band to quiet the music. He holds the microphone towards us and as we sing, he closes his eyes, raises his arms, and dances. Mark invigorates, delights, and even plays with us as he thanks us for the night and walks off stage while we wait expectantly for just one more appearance. And then he appears again as the audience goes wild. He finishes with a song and enraptures us as he holds a note for what seems like days and I realize, if you weren’t a Mark Anthony believer before, you will be now.

As part of the Goya Gives campaign, a series of initiatives the company has developed in partnership with United Way, Goya donated 75,000 pounds of food to local charities throughout the country. “Giving has always been an integral part of our culture, so as we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we wanted to give back to the communities that have always supported us since 1936,” said Robert Unanue, president of Goya Foods.

NYIFF Interviewed by Lily Agosto for En La Escena
I had the awesome opportunity to meet and get inside of the minds of some very talented and creative directors, writers, producers and actors.
Starting with documentary film maker Director Koen Suidgeest of KARLA'S ARRIVAL. He must of had a tremendous amount of courage and strength to make this film that follows a 19 years old mother, Suleylin Aguilar and baby Karla. Who live as a part of a group of kids in a small park in Manague, Nicaragua as they struggle through the first year of the child's life. It killed me to watch mother, Suleylin putting her new born baby Karla to sleep in a card board box! I would have never been able to work on this project without wanting to save every child in that park. Director Koen shares with us his experience and how Suleylin is living now.
Alice Gomes director, writer producer of her short film LAPIS DE COR created a very visual cinematic progression of this very touching story of Claudio, a poor 9 years old boy who lives alone with his mother, loves to draw. His father left years ago and Claudio nurtures the idea that drawing a colored portrait of his father will make him come home only to find he doesn't have any colored pencils...until he obtains 3 magical pencils. The story is actually brilliant and I look forward to seeing more of Ms. Gomes work.
The documentary PRECIOUS KNOWLEDGE Film maker Ari Palos tells us an inspiring story and shows that if we care enough about the future and eduction of our children this nation can be more powerful than we can imagine. Fewer than six in ten Latino adults in the United States have a high school diploma. Precious Knowledge is the unbelievable and inspiring story of high school seniors in the Mexican American Studies Program at Tucson High School. 82% of the students in the program will graduate and go on to college. Their journey will astound you. In our interview Precilla Rodriquez shares with us her experience of being in the film and traveling to New York for the first time.
We also caught up with Director Evan Buxbaum of his Short Film LA LINEA a dark comedy that takes place in the trunk of a car, lead actor Alejandro discovers he's not the only one crossing the boarder to the US and is forced to come face to face with what he hoped to leave behind in mexico. Evan shares his great experience making this hysterical short film and what to look forward to next. I want the FEATURE! what a tease!!!
Director Adam Schlachter shows in his documentary HOLLYWOOD WHORES, the raw honest truth about the trials and tribulation of being an aspiring actor. Anyone who is in the performing arts world can relate to this documentary making all artist ask themselves...how much are YOU willing to compromise for stardom???? These guys were great to talk to. Actor, Anup's gives advice to all inspiring actors. "Let go of the Diva attitude"!!! I personally know aspiring actors who won't take certain jobs because it's not the ideal role they dreams of, but as an artist you gotta stay open cause you never know where life will take you!
Director/Writer Matt Dunnerstick's world premiere of film THE CUSTOM MARY touches upon all relevant topics in today's world, with surprise twist in the story I did not expect. A spec of Christ's blood falls into the hands of a pair of preachers, they hatch a scheme to clone Jesus. All they need is a willing host. Alicia Sixtos plays Mary a modest young Latina churchgoer. It doesn't take much convincing for her to carry the Lord's child. As the pregnancy progresses, she finds comfort and support in Joe ( James Jolly) , an African American Low-Rider mechanic and aficionado. 9 months later, the outcome is not quite as expected and the Mary finds herself desperate and scared. GOD reveals Himself unexplored places, But there's mistaking justice when it's low-rider style.
G.W.B.
Director/Writer - Jonathan Ullman uses a touch of his own personal experience and a whole lot of intense imagination! This film takes place in the George Washington Bridge area and within the course of a day two dominican brother Javy and Diego fight to survival a ruthless drug kingpin. Go on the ride on the streets of Washington Heights with danger and what might be the very last day of their lives! Thrilling!
Postales Colombianas
Director - Ricardo Coral is getting some controversial response from this film, which means to me... "it's good" if you can walk away from watching a movie that makes you think and feel a certain way then the director has done he's job! In this film Piedad, Caridad and Fanny are intellectual feminists, independent and well-heeled. One night they meet up to bond over their shared experiences, memories and points of view. When they find themselves approached by a trio of seemingly normal-looking gentleman, little do they know that these men will end up being their executioners.
I hope you enjoyed our interviews and learned a little something about making your own dreams come true. Go and support these great films and stay plugged in because I'm getting all the answers you want to know!

Director Keon Suidgeest - Karla's Arrival
